Danielle Freakley

Danielle Freakley is an Australian born artist, half Seychelles Islander blooded and drops of other blood curdling. She works in performance, sculpture, reasonably shit dancing, sound, text or whatever other materials work to digest the ideas at the time. Her performances change daily social communication and relationships, exposing historical and lurking private projections and subtexts. This usually happens in collaboration with audiences who accidentally perform with her.

She has recently exhibited at the Tate, been a first selection finalist for the Arsenale of Venice Arte Laguna Prize and exhibited internationally in various Biennials, Triennials, National Galleries, State Galleries, Contemporary Art Spaces, Kitchen Floors, Snake Temples, Ski Slopes, Aquariums, Theme Parks, Bins, Beaches, Train Station Toilets and Graves.

Tell me what to say

Danielle has been living by speaking in the “Tell Me What To Say” manner since mid August and continues to with no end in sight as yet.

“Tell Me Shat To Say” was officially launched at ZK/U (Centre for Kunst and Urbanistics) Berlin, where Freakley is a fellow.

In the work, Freakley tells others what to say and invites them to tell her what to say. The magic word “say” must be said to indicate dictation of words for the other. When people repeat what they have been told to say, they are free to edit out words and add in a tone representing their feelings.

Freakley does not do this in appropriate work situations, organisational situations, with close friends privately or at home. In other public life situations, she tries to speak this way. This is a social performance and people are always invited to speak this way with others too, it is not limited to her as performer, it is open for anyone to do as a mode of speech, in any language. It is always collaborative, the audience performs as much as Freakley.

This work has been exhibited/performed at the Seychelles Biennial of Contemporary Art, ZKU (Centre for Kunst and Urbanistics) in Berlin Art Week, Performing Arts Forum Poetry Week in France, Prague, Liverpool, London, and continues internationally inside and outside of artistic institutions.
