Fances Disley - Liverpool Biennial
Francis Disley lives and works in Liverpool as a Biennial Associate artists. Her work consists of painting, printmaking, sculpture, performance and installation art. She is an artist who is interested in the state of flux, or she is otherwise worded it – unresolved works. Disley has a desire for happiness and mantras. She uses mantras to relate to her artwork to relieve her anxieties about being an artist and how she overcomes these to make work.
Her theme at the moment is distraction and irritations, exploring her inner irritation in life. Which in turn relate to Disley’s behaviour as she can be easily distracted.During her seminar she completed a relaxation exercise. The segment related to the desire for happiness and how in today’s day and age that we are always looking for happiness but only at our convenience.
Her inspiration comes from; Beth Gill – Electric midwife, Symmetry, Star trek, Gladiator – Liverpool girl.
Disley seeks to expose the thought process of the artist when wrestling with form and colour. She uses her own body to animate the crude painted objects and surfaces she creates.
Warming up
Her work often begins with playful activity in the studio, which she currently thinks of as a kind of constantly evolving ‘set’ and place where limitless influences can seep in – no matter how ridiculous they may later seem.
The Biennial’s invitation to create a design for a double-decker bus made me think of what this action could signify. She would be covering or dressing it up in some way, making it more unique, even possibly concealing its identity. She is also trained as a printmaker and am interested in process and how artists choose to translate their ideas, so the prospect of having her design realised by the expertise of the Arriva bus painters sounded like an exciting prospect.
